Study Aims to Increase Safety Along Boulder-Golden Corridor

One of Colorado's older highways connecting Golden and Boulder, CO 93, has become so notoriously dangerous that some of the commuters have started brandishing a popular bump sticker on their automobiles that highlights their accomplishments of survival, so far.

"Pray for me, I drive 93," it states.

Motorists who sport the bumper sticker say they put the badge of honor on their car for good luck. One such motorist, Steve Glennon of Boulder, says he put his on after witnessing all the auto accidents strewn along the dangerous corridor over the years, according to a Lakewood Sentinel article.1

Study Aims to Increase Safety Along Boulder-Golden Corridor | Lakewood Auto Accident Attorney

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) in partnership with WestConnect Coalition is undertaking an 18 month Planning and Environment Linkages (PEL) study that will look at ways to reduce congestion, improve overall operation and safety and look at ways to address long-term transportation needs.

The actual study will focus broadly on what is called the WestConnect Corridor. Here is what the WestConnect Corridor consists of:

  • C-470 from Kipling Street to the I-70/U.S. 6 division
  • S. 6 from C-470 to CO 58/CO 93 in Golden
  • CO 93 from Golden to Marshall Road in Boulder County

Issues Facing Highway 93

Several community members have shown up to CDOT and WestConnect Coalition open house meetings to air their concerns with county commissioners, council members, and city mayors. Here are just a few of the issues that motorists say they feel currently hinders their commute on CO 93 between Boulder and Golden:

  • Road rage incidences
  • Unsafe passing on road shoulders
  • Tailgating
  • Speeding

"We need to improve transportation in order to make travel safer along this corridor," said Golden resident M.L. Richardson. "It's very exciting that the various governmental entities are coming together for this."

What's Next for the CO 93 Study?

Once the 18 month-long study is conducted and solutions are proposed for improving the dangerous highway, the following things will have to occur:

  • Project funding must be established either by way of city or county budgeting, or as a tax ballot proposal.
  • Several rounds of screening of proposals through agency and government oversight committees.
  • Another round of public hearings.
  • There's also a telephone town hall scheduled for early 2017.
