IIHS Releases Top Safety Picks for Vehicles in 2016

Posted on January 30, 2016 in

The advancements in vehicle technology, as well as the continued focus on improving vehicle safety features, seems to be having a positive impact on the overall safety of cars, as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) added four more cars to its 2016 Top Safety Pick list.

According to IIHS, these vehicles included the Honda Civic 4-door, the Hyundai Sonata, the Lexus RX and the Nissan Altima. These vehicles joined a list of 48 other top safety picks (see list below) that have remained on the list since at least 2015.

“We asked auto manufacturers to do more this year to qualify for our safety awards, and they delivered,” IIHS President Adrian Lund told Forbes Magazine in December 2015.“For the first time, a good rating in the challenging small overlap front crash test is a requirement to win, in addition to an available front crash prevention system.”

How the IIHS Chooses the Top Vehicle Safety Picks

In order to qualify for IIHS’ 2016 Top Safety Pick, a car needs to earn a good rating in five crashworthiness tests, according to IIHS officials. These five tests include the:

  • Small overlap front test
  • Moderate overlap front test
  • Side test
  • Roof strength test
  • Head restraint test.

Vehicles equipped with optional front crash prevention quality packages qualified for either a regular rating or a plus rating.
