What’s the best way to drive safely in heavy traffic?

Posted on October 4, 2018 in

Just because you aren’t moving at a high rate of speed doesn’t mean you can’t be part of a motor vehicle accident. You need to be on your toes at all times.

There are many steps you can take to drive safely in heavy traffic, including the following:

  • Don’t weave from lane to lane: This doesn’t allow you to make up nearly as much time as you think. Instead, it simply increases the chance of an accident.
  • Avoid aggressive driving: You may be in a hurry, but that doesn’t mean you should partake in aggressive maneuvers that put you and others in danger.
  • Leave a safe following distance: There’s never a good time to tailgate the vehicle in front of yours. Leave a minimum of three seconds stopping time.
  • Watch what’s happening around you: For example, if you closely watch the traffic ahead, there’s less chance of causing a rear-end collision.
  • Avoid distractions: When traffic slows, you may be tempted to pull out your cellphone or change the radio station. Don’t look for things to keep you busy. Instead, focus on the road at all times.

Driving safely in heavy traffic is easier said than done, especially when you consider what’s happening around you. Even if you’re following these tips, other drivers may act in a negligent manner.

If another person causes a car accident in heavy traffic, move to safety and call 911. From there, let the police control the scene while you receive medical treatment. You can then contact your insurance company, all the while focusing on protecting your legal rights.
