Pedestrian-vehicle accidents can happen for many reasons

Posted on August 20, 2019 in

As a pedestrian, you can’t afford to overlook the steps you can take to remain safe. A simple mistake, such as crossing the street at the wrong time, can result in a serious injury or death.

Understanding the most common causes of pedestrian-vehicle accidents will put you in position to avoid trouble in the future. Here are some of the many mistakes a driver can make that can cause an accident:

  • Distracted driving: For example, if a person is texting while they speed toward an intersection, there’s a greater chance of striking a pedestrian.
  • Drowsy driving: When a driver is less than 100 percent alert, they’ll find it difficult to make the right decisions in a timely manner.
  • Driving under the influence: Alcohol, prescription medication and illegal drugs impair a driver’s ability to make safe decisions.
  • Disobeying traffic laws: This can be as simple as running a red light or stop sign, driving in a bicycle lane or failing to use turn signals. All of these things increase the risk of an accident with a pedestrian.
  • Ignoring weather conditions: When the weather takes a turn for the worse, such as heavy rain or snow, it’s critical for drivers to alter their approach.

Even though you can’t control others, you can take a few steps to avoid trouble:

  • Cross the road at crosswalks (and nowhere else)
  • Never ignore the “walk” and “don’t walk” signals at an intersection
  • Don’t dart into traffic
  • Make eye contact with drivers
  • Play it safe at all times

The final step is most important, as it’s always better to err on the side of caution. It may slow you down, but it will also keep you safe.

If you’re injured in a pedestrian-vehicle accident, don’t attempt to leave the scene. Call 911 and administer first aid if you’re able to do so.

After receiving treatment, you’ll have a clear idea of your injuries, treatment schedule and prognosis for making a full recovery.

As time allows, consult with your insurance company and look into other ways to hold the negligent driver responsible.
